It rained. More pertinently, it rained up-country. And two days later the inevitable happened. All that water – all that topsoil, those uprooted trees, dead cows and bloated sheep – ended the down-river journey at Wanganui. Just in time for high tide.
A state of emergency was declared, homes were evacuated and roads adjacent to the river were closed.
The next morning we took a look. It wasn’t the biggest flood we’ve seen in Wanganui but, as the pictures show, it was worth recording.
