Since writing it in 2002, I’ve always liked this sad little country waltz. I’ve never previously attempted to record it because the tessatura’s a bit challenging. This rendition started out as an experiment with a new sequencer, but I progressively removed all the electronica.
Harry’s counting her broken hearts tonight
Reliving the pain and the tears, and the flight
From promises given, concessions made in vain …
Harry’s counting her broken hearts tonight
Reliving the pain and the tears, and the flight
From promises given, concessions made in vain
Harry’s drinking the pain out of her dreams
Distilling the future, decanting schemes
To mellow, to fortify thin and bitter wine
Only Harry’s home tonight
Harry’s home tonight
Only Harry’s home tonight
Harry’s home tonight
Choosing her colours from a palette of grays
She paints pastel scenes from lonely days
Harry’s reading her favourite magazine
The one where the words fade, and Harry’s dreams
Take over the story and make every picture hers
Harry’s telephone has no call to ring
She’s past desperation – now everything
That might lead to rejection is unplugged at the wall
Only Harry’s home tonight
Harry’s home tonight
Only Harry’s home tonight
Harry’s home tonight
Each night she waits, to hear the knock on her door
That brings company and maybe more
‘Cause it’s the last waltz
And Harry’s home tonight
