If you haven't already heard it, Call it Love is a great place to start.

Offshore Weather
updated Thursday 8 January 2009

My day starts at 5am, often to the accompaniment of National Radio. The marine weather forecast read by Lloyd Scott at ten past five has been background to the making of more cups of green tea than I care to consider. I wrote this song in the winter of 2007, based on some interesting guitar chords; E-shapes with fingering variations. I loved its soaring melody, but my initial attempts to record it were never satisfactory. Coming back to Offshore Weather a year later, I put down what was intended to be a scat piano track to help me record the vocals before I started messing with the guitars. But the piano insisted on staying, and ultimately I didn't use acoustic guitars at all. Recording this has been an exciting little adventure for me - it's developed in directions I certainly didn't expect.

The QUICK LISTEN button above will immediately play half a minute of the song. It's not hi-fi, but it'll give you an idea of what Offshore Weather sounds like, soaring melody and all (33 seconds, 385kb).

You're welcome to download the complete song. This is a higher quality encoding and weighs in at 9.7MB.

Lyrics

From the coast we see every change in the sky. Seas rise and fall and the clouds motor by; we watch their long shadows, but never ask why offshore weather doesn't reach the inland country of the heart ... read the full lyrics
